LEDs

After we set up the Eco Society in the summer of 2019, this was our first project, so it will always have a place in our hearts! The project to switch all our lights to energy efficient LEDs was also a huge success as we raised £35,000 which was enough to replace all the lights in the school and reduce the school’s electricity consumption by 20% and avoiding 10 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year.

In the autumn of 2019, we entered the M&S Energy Awards where we had the chance to win £5,000 for our project. Our caretakers trained the team to survey the lights in the school to work out how many new lights we’d need and how much energy that would save. Our Crowdfunder campaign helped us win the M&S award and raise enough money to switch two of the school blocks over to LEDs.

The next year, the Eco Society decided that it had to get the job finished off and the Ready, Steady, Glas-go! campaign was born. Despite being back in lockdown, we set the school the challenge of a 1500km sponsored walk, cycle or run (socially distant of course!). That’s the distance from our school to Glasgow and back.  Glasgow is where COP26, the UN’s climate change conference took place in November 2021. The result was that students, staff and parents walked, ran or cycled 3,460km which was twice the distance of our school to Glasgow and back whilst raising £25,000 in the process.
