The Sir Roger Manwood School’s current Library building was opened in 1905 as part of the re-foundation of the school estate in 1895, and was formerly used as the School Hall from 1906 to 1957.
For a period, our Library was the only book reference collection in Sandwich.
During the 1920’s the Library was used as the venue for a lively student Debating Society, which examined the latest political and social issues of the day.
The Library’s stock collection has been gradually built up, encouraged by the School Governors, since 1921.
Strongly linked to the Languages department, book preservation, book binding and repairing was a regular practice of the student Librarians throughout the 1930’s.
In more recent history, the Library was refurbished and modernised in 1994 to include a reading and study area for students to make use of. These areas are situated on a mezzanine level above the ground floor book area.
The current Library now possesses over 25,000 books and reference volumes, and takes pride in stocking a broad selection of fiction and non-fiction books, as well as periodicals, newspapers and magazines.
There are two soft seated areas as well as access to computers and printing facilities. Students also have the capacity to listen to educational audio and visual material.
The Library is open from 8.30am to 4pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during term time.
It is the venue for the after school Homework Club, and hosts the Yoto Carnegie Shortlist books from ‘Scholastic’ and participates in Buzz Books for the Lower School. The Library hosts book sales and fairs, as well as events such as guest speakers and university talks to which all students, particularly sixth formers, are encouraged to attend. Sixth form students are also given support by the Library Team with any research they need to undertake for their A Level or Extended Project Qualification.
The Library also robustly supports the English Curriculum with regular reading, speaking and listening lessons taking place on the Mezzanine floor. During these lessons, students are encouraged to be more independent learners, including encouraging them to read books from our extensive collection that they may not have immediately been attracted to.
There are 20 Student Librarians currently, who are drawn from across all year groups. They support the maintenance, displays and development of the Library including preparations for special events such as World Book Day.
The Library prides itself on its unique student seasonal displays, which creatively support and reflect teaching and learning aims from a wide variety of subjects.
